October is Black History Month (BHM), a time to recognise and celebrate Black people’s contributions to British society. This month-long celebration honours the events and individuals who have shaped and continue to shape our society.

Originating in the US in 1915, BHM was established fifty years after the abolition of slavery by Carter G. Woodson, a historian, in collaboration with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).

At LondonEnergy, we take pride in having a diverse workforce of people. Celebrating and educating ourselves about different cultures and their histories is essential. By doing so, we hope to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the achievements and challenges people from different backgrounds face.

Tell us a little about your role.

I work as a Bulking Operative at LondonEnergy, where my responsibilities include maintaining a  clean and safe workspace. I prioritise the wellbeing of my colleagues and members of the public, by staying vigilant to ensure a safe environment. I’m also an employee forum representative, which allows me to participate in important meetings and voice the concerns of my colleagues from Hornsey Street.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that I am contributing to the community and ensuring the safety of everyone on site. I also enjoy working with a fantastic team who share my commitment to this important work.

How did you get started in your current career?

I began my career in the waste management industry, working for companies such as Bywaters, Veolia, and Islington Council. I stayed dedicated to this field, and I’m now happy to work for LondonEnergy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day is to be happy, cool and collective.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I like spending time with my children and my partner, writing music, listening to music, cooking, and looking after my mum.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is important to me because it’s a time to remember our origins and to honour the people who fought for our rights and the progress we’ve made. It’s a reminder to keep pushing forward, just like those who persevered through tough times in the past. They continued to show resilience, respect, and determination, and never gave up on their beliefs.

Is there a particular person from Black history who has inspired you?

I find inspiration from the following –  Martin Luther King, Jr., Bessie Coleman, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, and Claudette Colvin. Each of them has made significant contributions to the fight for equality and justice, and their legacies continue to inspire me.
